Crystal Science Projects - Rock Candy Project
Crystal Science Projects - Rock Candy and Sugar
The purpose of this crystal science project experiment is to determine which kind of sucrose produces the most rock candy crystals. Background:
Research information on crystals and rock candy. Answer the following questions: What are crystals? How do they grow? Why are they important? What is a supersaturated solution? How is rock candy made?
Hypothesis:
From your research you will predict which type of sucrose (pure sucrose or brown sugar) will produce the most rock candy crystals.
Materials: (Adult supervision of kids is always recommended.)
- 2 Rock Candy Project Crystal Growing Kits: Kit includes pure sucrose.
Rock Candy Crystal Growing Kit - ages 8 and up (adult supervision required) - Brown sugar
- Camera
- Paper
- Pencil
1. Gather materials needed for your experiment. List all materials from your kit.
2. Open one of the kits. Read and follow experimental instruction guide using the pure sucrose to make one rock candy stick. (Parental assistance is required.)
3. Open the second kit and follow the instruction guide substituting the brown sugar for the pure sucrose.
4. Make sure that both crystal growing vessels are exposed to the same conditions.
5. Monitor both crystal growing vessels and record observations for the recommended time on your kit.
6. Record your observations for the pure sucrose crystals and the brown sugar crystals.
7. Compare similarities and differences in both types of candy. Take pictures.
8. Repeat the experiment recording all observations and data. Were the results similar or different?
Results:
Record your data and compare your results for your rock candy project. Graph and chart your data. Which candy group had the most crystals? Which tasted the best?
Conclusion:
Summarize what happened in your rock candy project experiment based on your results. Explain patterns in your data. Did your data support your hypothesis? If not, explain why. Evaluate your project and make suggestions for improvements.
