Rocket Science Fair Projects

The following bottle rocket science fair project is meant to give you an example of how rocket science fair projects are to be performed. After completing this rocket project, try coming up with additional ideas and procedures for expanding this experiment.

Rocket Science Fair Projects - Bottle Rockets

This bottle rocket science fair project will examine how the amount of water in a bottle rocket affects its flight time.

Background:

Before beginning this experiment, research several basic facts about bottle rockets such as:
  • What are bottle rockets?

  • How do they work?

  • What factors affect how high a bottle rocket can be launched?

  • Will adjusting the amount of water used affect the maximum time the rocket will remain in the air?

Hypothesis:

Based on your research, predict what amount of water will produce the longest flight duration.

Materials: (Adult supervision of kids is always recommended.)
  • Water rocket launcher kit - Suggested water rocket launcher kit:
   Bottle Rocket Launcher
     Scientifics Online: Bottle Rocket Launcher
  • Water

  • Stopwatch

  • Ruler (optional)

  • Bicycle pump

  • 1 litter bottle

Procedure: (Caution: Don't stand too close to the rocket when it launches.)

1. Gather the materials needed for your bottle rocket science fair project experiment.

2. Find a flat, open area to begin this experiment.

3. Follow the instructions in your kit to assemble your water rocket launcher. Do not place your bottle in the launcher or fill it with water just yet.

4. Fill roughly 1/3 of the 1 litter bottle with water.

5. Place the rocket on the launcher and follow the instructions provided in your kit for launching the rocket.

6. Launch your rocket and use a stopwatch to time how long it stays in the air. Record this and detailed observations about the rocket's journey in your data table.

7. Repeat steps 4-6 five more times substituting 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, and a full bottle of water for the 1/3 bottle of water.

Data Table
Amount of Water
Flight Duration
Observations
1/3
1/2
2/3
3/4
1/1

Results:

Observe your results for this bottle rocket science fair projects experiment. When did the rocket stay in the air for the longest amount of time? When did it stay in the air for the shortest amount of time? Was there a time when the rocket did not launch at all? Graph and chart your data and make sure you can explain how the amount of water affected how high the rocket launched.

Conclusion:

Summarize what happened in your bottle rocket science fair projects experiment based on your results. Did your rocket behave as you predicted? If not, why? Evaluate your project and hypothesis, note any experimental sources of error, and make suggestions for improvements.
