Wind Energy Science Fair Projects

The following sample wind energy science fair projects experiment is meant to give you ideas on how to perform experiments and arrange your project. After completing this project, try coming up with additional ideas and procedures for expanding this experiment.

Wind Energy Science Fair Projects: Wind Speed and Power

This science fair project examines the relationship between wind speed and wind strength.

Background:

Research information on wind. Use these questions to guide you: What is wind energy? How are wind speed and wind strength related? How are wind speed and wind strength measured?

Hypothesis:

From your research, formulate your hypothesis on the relationship between wind speed and wind strength. Will a low wind speed produce high or low wind power? Will a high wind speed produce high or low wind power?

Materials: (Adult supervision of kids is always recommended.)
  • Suggested kit: Sail Car
           Sail Car

            Science Kit: Sail Car
  • Tabletop Fan

  • Meter Stick

Procedure:

1. Gather the materials needed for your wind energy science fair projects experiment.

2. Follow the instructions for setting up and using your sail car.

3. Place the sail car and the fan on a flat, smooth surface.

4. Turn the fan on to the lowest speed setting and face it toward the car. Let the car sail until it comes to a complete stop.

5. Using the meter stick, measure the distance the sail car travelled. Record this in your data table.

6. Repeat steps 3-5, using the fan's medium and high speed settings. Record the distance the car travelled in your data table 1.

7. Repeat the experiment two more times.

Results:

Record your data and compare your results. Which wind speed resulted in the greatest distance travelled? Which wind speed resulted in the least distance travelled? Why do you think so? How are wind speed and strength related?

Conclusion:

Summarize what happened in your wind energy experiment based on your results. Explain the results of your experiment. Was your hypothesis supported? If not, explain why. Evaluate your experiment and suggest improvements.
